How a Simple Apple Sparked a Movement of Hope

In December 2005, a simple wish changed everything. A student in a public school in Payatas asked, “Ano ang wish mo ngayon Pasko?” the kid answered: ‘Apple po” Bakit apple di ka pa ba nakakain ng apple madami tinda sa labas ng school pabili ka kay nanay mo.”

It was a surprising request—apples weren’t a common holiday treat for kids in the community. When I asked why he wanted an apple, he explained that his mother couldn’t afford to buy one because they prioritized buying rice so the whole family could eat.

That moment struck me deeply. Something as simple as an apple—a fruit that many of us take for granted—was a Christmas wish for this child.

The Birth of Project Munting Hiling

Determined to make his wish come true, I reached out to friends and colleagues, asking if they could contribute so we could buy apples for more children. That year, we were able to distribute over 3,000 red apples to students in Payatas.

What started as a small gesture of kindness turned into an annual tradition. Every Christmas since, Project Munting Hiling has continued to bring joy to indigent children, ensuring that they receive not just apples, but also the gift of hope and love.

Growing the Tradition: From Apples to Noche Buena Packs

Over the years, our mission grew. We partnered with private individuals and organizations like Rotary Club and the likes allowing us to expand our Christmas outreach. Before the holiday break, we now organize a special party for 300 children from underprivileged communities, making their Christmas even more memorable.

What began with apples has evolved into something bigger—from apple to HAM and we now distribute Noche Buena packs, ensuring that families have a hearty meal to celebrate the holidays together.
